About Elaine Maichin
I am a neurodivergent, CDA-licensed Psychologist, American Licensed Professional Counselor, and neurodiversity-affirming, trauma-informed therapist with over 13 years of clinical experience. I have worked with adults, adolescents, families, and professionals across a wide range of mental health and clinical settings.
My clinical background in the United States includes community mental health, family-based services, school settings, behavioral health, crisis response, case management, correctional settings, and private practice. I am also a trained Crisis Prevention and Intervention Instructor and previously led crisis response and clinical practice training for more than 200 clinical staff across multiple service environments. My experience also includes clinical program development, management, supervision, and professional training.
I relocated to Dubai, United Arab Emirates, in 2021 and have since worked across mental health settings in the UAE. In addition to my clinical work, I am an Adjunct Lecturer in Psychology at Murdoch University Dubai, where I have been teaching since 2024.
My professional and personal experiences as a neurodivergent psychologist inspired me to establish Uniquely You Mental Health Center LLC in Dubai. Through Uniquely You, my mission is to provide care that recognizes each person as a whole, rather than focusing only on a diagnosis. I aim to advance mental health awareness, psychoeducation, empowerment, and trauma-informed, neurodiversity-affirming care within the UAE and beyond.
What You Can Expect in Therapy
Therapy is a collaborative process, and I believe it should be shaped around you as an individual. I aim to create a space where you feel heard, respected, and supported while being able to explore difficult experiences openly and at your own pace.
Sessions may include gaining a deeper understanding of yourself and your patterns, processing past and present experiences, and developing practical strategies that support you in everyday life. We may also explore how your nervous system responds to stress, safety, relationships, and your environment, building greater awareness of what helps you feel more regulated and connected.
My role is not to tell you who you should be, but to work alongside you in creating meaningful change that aligns with your needs, values, and goals.
My Work Emphasizes
- Understanding the connection between thoughts, emotions, behaviors, relationships, trauma, and the nervous system
- Exploring emotional needs, attachment patterns, and past experiences that may influence present-day patterns and wellbeing
- Providing culturally responsive, trauma-informed care that respects each person’s identity, values, background, and lived experiences
- Building greater self-understanding, self-compassion, authenticity, and awareness of individual nervous system needs
- Supporting clients in developing practical tools for emotional regulation, relationships, boundaries, and everyday functioning
My therapeutic style is warm, grounded, open, supportive, and direct. I integrate trauma-focused approaches, including modified EMDR and somatic practices, to support trauma processing, nervous system regulation, and a greater sense of safety and connection.
Neurodiversity-Affirming Care
Neurodivergent ways of thinking, communicating, processing, and experiencing the world are valid forms of human diversity. My work centers each person’s strengths, needs, identity, autonomy, and lived experience without focusing on changing who they are.
I support neurodivergent individuals to:
- Understand and embrace their unique neurodivergent identity
- Recognize their strengths, needs, and individual ways of processing the world
- Advocate for their needs, boundaries, and accommodations
- Reduce internalized shame and ableism through greater self-understanding and self-compassion
- Better understand sensory, emotional, communication, and executive functioning needs
- Develop supportive strategies for overwhelm, burnout, and nervous system regulation
- Understand masking and its impact while supporting greater authenticity, self-acceptance, and freedom to be yourself
My Therapeutic Approach
I work with adolescents and adults, both in-person and online, using a holistic, integrative, neurodiversity-affirming, culturally responsive, and trauma-informed approach. Therapy is individualized to each person’s needs, experiences, strengths, and goals.
